WHY should I join the DEC?
DEC members are the ground troops of the Democratic party. Among other key roles, we go out and register new voters and sign them up for vote by mail, which can improve voting by as much as twenty-percent! We train volunteers, fund raise, hold neighborhood house parties, watch the polls for fraud, educate voters, and energize the Democratic party. The DEC is the most grassroots level of the party’s organization where we can make the most impact. Join the DEC to have a voice in how the party is run. If that’s not enough, check out the top five reasons to join.
WHAT is the Democratic Executive Committee?
The Osceola Democratic Executive Committee (DEC) is an all volunteer, non-profit organization with the responsibility of discharging Democratic Party affairs within the county. The members, Precinct Captains, and Associates are charged with representing their precinct and acting as their voters connection to the Democratic Party. The DEC is led by member-elected officers: Chair, Vice Chair, State Committeeman, State Committeewoman, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer. The Precinct Captains (sometimes referred to as State Committeewoman and man) act as our neighborhood connection to the Florida Democratic Party.
WHO can join?
Any registered Democrat can attend our meetings and apply to become a member of the DEC.
HOW do I join the DEC?
Joining the DEC is a three step process. You must attend three consecutive meetings and fill out an application. Next the credentials committee will evaluate you and recommend you to the body. Finally, the membership of the DEC must approve you by a majority vote. Once you are a member you must attend the meetings and cannot exceed three unexcused absences in a year. The application includes a Loyalty Oath which must be signed. It means you cannot support a non-Democrat against a Democrat in a partisan election.
If your precinct is already filled, you may be appointed as an At-Large member of the Democratic Executive Committee.
The rules are different during a presidential election year. Every four years, the membership is wiped clean. Everyone must apply to the Supervisor of Elections within a specific window of time. If more than one person applies for your position, Precinct Captains will go to a vote during the primary. In December, you will then be a member and be eligible to vote and run for the officers positions during our reorganization.
WHEN are DEC meetings?
The DEC meetings are held at 7:00 pm sharp on the fourth Thursday of every month except November and December. Try to arrive around 6:30-6:45 pm to socialize and sign in before the meeting. Sign up to our mailing list to receive meeting notices and/or RSVP on our Events page. We hope to see you soon!
